PERSONAL SECURITY

When living in a different country and environment, it is essential that you look after your personal belongings. Here are some useful tips:

  • Do ensure that you lock your room and main entrance to your house if you are going out, even if you are only leaving for a short time.
  • Do close all your windows before going out.
  • Don't let strangers into the flat or house. If it is a business call ask to see their identity card first.
  • Don't walk alone after dark or use unlit short cuts if you are on your own.
  • Don't leave your keys in your door or in communal areas where they can be stolen.
  • Don't put your name or room number on your keyring.
  • Don't carry large amounts of cash or wear large amounts of jewellery.
  • Do keep your cash card separately from your purse or wallet.
  • Do tell a friend where you are going and when you can be expected to return.
  • Do avoid isolated bus stops and train stations.
  • Do avoid isolated cash machines.
  • Don't hitch hike or accept lifts from strangers.
  • Do carry an attack alarm.
  • Do insure personal possessions if possible.
