Many students find that the British weather affects them alot. It is epecially cold, damp and windy in winter (although you may feel like this throughout the year!). You may be used to a warmer climate and find the general winter months difficult to adjust to; especially if it is affecting your health in terms of colds and flu.
Wear clothes that will protect you from the rain and wind. in very cold weather it is better to 'layer' your clothes. this means wearing several items of clothing such as T-shirts, shirts and jumpers over each other to trap air and insulate yourself. 'Thermal' underwear can help you achieve this, as it is extremely effective in keeping you warm. In extremely cold weather thick socks, gloves, scarves and hats will retainbody heat which is lost quickly through the head, hands and feet.
You can find a good range of reasonable priced clothing of all kinds in the town centre, notably:
Bolton outdoor market, which good for inexpensive thermal underwear, gloves, socks and jumpers. Open Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. It is also excellent for fresh fruit and vegetables at cheap prices.
Primark - Crompton Place Shopping Centre
British houses are not always well designed to keep out the cold especially in older houses where there is no central heating. So, make sure that your house is warm enough and that you have plenty of warm bedding, blankets and duvets. try not to overheat your room, as heating costs can be expensive especially if you have an electric heater, and you'll feel even colder when you do have to venture outdoors.
The most easiest and convenient place to do your shopping is the supermarkets.
Morrisons - Blackhorse Street and Chorley Old Road
Asda - Blackburn Road and Middlebrook Retail Park
Sainsburys - Trinity Street, Bolton
Aldi - Trinity Street, Bolton
There are also many specialist shops near the University. Derby Street and Deane Road offers a thriving number of Asian shops that stock ingredients from the Indian sub-continent, Africa and the Middle East. Halal meat is also readily available.
Please remember prices are fixed, and you cannot haggle for a cheaper price.
Supermarket prices can vary considerably, so shop around and look out for regular special offers and cheaper cuts of meat. Bolton outdoor market has a well-known fish and meat section, which is much cheaper than the supermarkets.
There are also inexpensive general stores which stock a variety of goods such as food, cutlery and crockery, toiletries, baby products and household goods. It is well worth visiting the shops listed below:
Bodycare - Market Place
Home Bargains - Newport Street
There are a number of charity shops run by organisations such as Oxfam, Imperial Cancer Research, Save the Children and the RSPCA, which sell second hand goods and clothes. These shops can be popular amongst students as they are very cheap and you can find some excellent bargains.
