Activities within the Students' Union

One of the best ways to start meeting new people and to develop extra-curricular interests is to join one of our various clubs or societies.  Clubs and societies play an important role in expanding your social activities, help you meet like-minded people and allow you to develop new interests.  You can join as many Clubs and Societies you as like.

How to Join

Visit the Students' Union Clubs and Societies Centre which is based on the lower ground floor of the Students' Union building.  Here you will find the Student Activities Co-ordinator and the Vice President (Finance and Recreation) who will be available to answer any queries or questions you may have regarding UBSU Clubs and Societies.

The office is open Monday to Friday 9.15am - 5.00pm Term time only (subject to change)

Sports

Any student interested in becoming a member of a sports club does not have to be a first class player or athlete.  Coaching is given to our clubs for a small fee, and caters for novices as well as those who are more experienced.  The majority of our sporting clubs actively take part in organised competitive sport via BUSA (British Universities Sports Association).

Dates for competitive sporting events, organised through BUSA are sent to the Student Activities Co-ordinator and Vice President, who will communicate these fixtures to Club Officers (usually Wednesday afternoon).

As a member of a Sporting Club your membership includes:

  • training
  • Competition entry
  • subsidised transport
  • insurance cover
  • use of kit/equipment
  • affiliation to some governing bodies

You will also have the opportunity to participate in:

  • NGB coaching awards
  • Minibus Drives Awarness Scheme
  • First Aid Courses
  • Officer Training

Men's Badminton, Women's Badminton, Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball, Men's Football, Women's Football, Men's Hockey, Women's Hockey, Netball, Men's Rugby Union, Men's Cricket, Gaelic AA.

We have two Sports Clubs that enter BUSA competitions, but are classed as a recreational activity:-
Trampolining, Climbing.

Societies

Societies are, in general, non-sporting groups with a common interest.  This section includes, for example, The Christian Union, The Disabled Students Action Group and the Islamic Society amongst others.
